Designing a ring for someone I haven't met is always interesting. The lovely Koi was living in Japan at the time and Craig had clear preferences for her ring: he wanted a main gemstone in the blue-green family. He liked the powerful metaphysical properties of tourmaline for his precious Koi, so I began the search for a spectacular blue-green (Indicolite) tourmaline for the centre stone. While I was at Baselworld in Switzerland, I sourced some lovely Indicolite tourmalines. To help me understand Koi's style, he described her as elegant–sporty, whose symbol is a firefly. From the pictures of her that he had sent, I could see that her stunning beauty required a symmetrical and regal design, with a creative and light-hearted accent.
By combining pear-shaped diamonds and round amethysts as accent stones around the centre tourmaline, I was able to symbolize fireflies and also incorporate Koi's favourite colour, purple.
